Thin-Films are the Best Option for Solar Panel Production

solar panel house systemThe photovoltaic (PV) sector has grown significantly during the last decade and is at the same time changing the future of renewable energy forever. The question that used to start with “if” now begins with “when” – When will we be able to achieve complete transition from traditional fuels to sustainable energy? The manufacturing of solar cells mainly relies on crystallin silicon. More than half of the production is with multi-crystallin silicon cells, followed by mono crystal cells, and the remaining is left for thin-film technologies.

Regardless of the overall progress and cost efficacy achieved since the 90s, the PV industry is still far more expensive in comparison to fossil fuel production. Another peculiar factor to consider is which of the methods of solar cell manufacturing will have the most effective/short “energy payback” interval. This means an interval of time when the energy produced by solar cell devices will beat the energy that was required for their production. With this respect, technologies based on thin-film production outperform the other two methods mentioned earlier.

Thin-film technologies’ energy payback kicks in after one year (in sunny regions), compared to two or even three years of their analogues. The process of successful thin-film application depends on many numbers and parameters for thin film, nature of the surfaces it’s deposed on, and the environmental factors. To be able to control all the mentioned variables, thin-film characterization tools are used to deliver information during manufacturing, and thus enable full control of the manufacturing environment.
